The Portland Logbook #3

This Week in Portland Maine

The Art Mart: Where Portland’s Creativity Starts

It’s a rite of passage for MECA kids. When you first start, you’ll probably spend way too much time (and money) at The Art Mart figuring out which brushes don’t shed and which sketchbooks actually hold up to watercolor. By graduation, The Art Mart feels like home, the kind of place where you can walk in stressed about a project and walk out holding the exact thing you didn’t know you needed.

But here’s the thing: you don’t have to be an artist to love it. Maybe you’re just looking for the perfect notebook, the kind that makes you want to fill the pages. Maybe you’re testing out fancy pens or picking up a set of watercolors, convinced this will be the time you finally learn how to use them. Art Mart has something for everyone—from casual doodlers to the painters, printmakers, and sculptors shaping Portland’s creative scene.

And places like this… They’re rare. There are fewer than 200 independent art supply shops left in the U.S. Think about that. Just 200. Every year, more of them disappear, replaced by big-box stores where no one knows the difference between cold press and hot press paper. The Art Mart is different. It’s personal. It’s a space where you can ask for advice and actually get it. It’s a shop that doesn’t just sell supplies—it fuels creativity.

I can tell you that firsthand. I’m a relatively new oil painter, and at this point, I basically live here. I walk in with a hundred questions, no idea what I’m looking for, and somehow always leave with an answer. The team at Art Mart will take all the time in the world to help you figure out exactly what you need—even if they don’t sell it themselves. They genuinely just want to help Maine artists create art.

Next time you’re walking down Congress Street, stop in. Pick up a fresh sketchbook, test out a new ink, grab a tube of paint. Even if you have no idea what you’re looking for, you’ll leave with something—maybe a tool, maybe an idea, maybe just ink-stained fingers and the motivation to start something new.

The Art Mart Favorites: Local Artists You Should Know

Josh, the owner of The Art Mart, sees it all— the late-night rushes for one last tube of paint, the students nervously picking out their first supplies, the pros who know exactly what they need before they even step through the door. And over the years, there are artists who become more than customers—they become part of The Art Mart family.

Two of those artists: Tom Dailey & Rick Hamilton

🎨 Tom Dailey – A frequent face at Art Mart, Tom isn’t just a regular—he’s part of the place. If you’ve ever wandered in with a question about supplies, there’s a good chance he might have helped you. But beyond that, he’s an artist in his own right.

This piece of Tom’s work ( though he’s a sculpture student at MECA) really captures his talent as a painter. It blends structured chaos and warmth, like a cityscape dissolving into light. The golden yellows, deep reds, and electric blues create a rhythm that pulls you in, almost like a visual jazz composition. It has an architectural feel, but also something organic, like a memory that’s slipping just out of focus.

You can find him at Art Mart, stocking shelves and offering advice, but his real work happens on the canvas. Where color, movement, and texture come together in a way that’s uniquely his. Follow Tom on Instagram

🎨 Rick Hamilton – Bold, textured, and deeply connected. His work captures solidarity, movement, and emotion through striking figures and vibrant color.

Three Amigos, one of his standout pieces, is a perfect example—rich in warm tones, layered brushwork, and a quiet yet powerful presence. Whether hanging in a gallery or spotted around town, Rick’s work stays with you, drawing you in with its energy and depth. Keep an eye out—his art has a way of finding you. Follow Rick on

Now It’s Your Turn

I want to feature more local Maine artists in The Portland Logbook, and I need your help. Who are the artists you can’t stop thinking about? Who’s creating work that deserves more eyes on it? Send me your favorites—painters, sculptors, printmakers, anyone making something great in Maine. I’ll be sharing more stories from Portland’s creative community, and your recommendations are where it starts.

A Heartbreaking Goodbye to Sissle & Daughters Café

We’re gutted to see the Sissle & Daughters Café in Woodfords Corner close after such a long-awaited opening. Their beloved cheesemonger and grocer shop will remain open, but losing the café still feels like a blow to Portland’s food scene.

Ever since I wandered into what used to be the Portland Cheese Shop and met Claire—the head cheesemonger who, by the way, makes Tahini Sea Salt Brownies that are absolutely insane—I’ve been hooked. They stock Rancho Gordo beans (a household staple for me, though I’ll admit my food-related niche hobbies are a little intense). They also carry Burlap & Barrel spices, which I’ve been obsessed with since my food styling days in Brooklyn. And don’t even get me started on the tortillas from Caramelo—once an online-only find, now a local staple.

Naturally, I was beyond excited when Sissle & Daughters announced their café at Woodfords Corner. That neighborhood has always felt full of potential to me. It quickly became a lunchtime coffee ritual—a perfect excuse to meet my friend who works next door, grab a cortado, and treat myself to an olive oil cake or a brie and jam sandwich.

Walking into the café meant being hit with the scent of fresh espresso and warm pastries. The shelves were stocked with beautifully curated items—artisan cheeses, freshly baked goods, and just enough gourmet oddities to make it feel like you’d stumbled into someone’s impossibly cool European pantry.

The news of the café’s closing hit hard. An unforeseen emergency forced the decision, and while it’s heartbreaking, I can only hope this is a temporary goodbye. Portland will be waiting for their triumphant return, ready to welcome them back when the time is right.

Until then, we at The Portland Logbook wish you all the best. We’ll be here, cheering you on.

Where Should I Eat Next? Mash Tun

If I’m being honest, when I told some friends I was heading to MashTun, their immediate reaction was "Why?? That place is just a dive/ tourist trap." Not exactly a glowing endorsement. But I had to see for myself—if someone recommended it to me, there had to be a reason.

Do I drink beer? I want to say yes because I love trying everything, but do I actually enjoy beer? Not really. Just not my thing. But when I showed up, I was starving, and food was the only thing on my mind.

That’s when I noticed the couple sitting next to me digging into burgers. They saw me eyeing their food and immediately said, "This is the best burger under $10 in the city."

And honestly? They weren’t wrong. It’s the best version of a dad-grilling-in-the-backyard burger—charcoal-seared, no frills, just pure nostalgia on a plate. Is it the best burger I’ve ever had? No. But did it hit the spot in the exact way I needed it to? Absolutely. I also couldn’t resist the Cajun fries—they were crispy and seasoned just right, a little kick without overdoing it.

When i asked the bartender where i should go next he slid my burger over and said, ”I’m a West End guy, so I’m partial to the spots over there. But Pai Men Miyake? It’s definitely worth checking out.”

So yeah, maybe MashTun isn’t the tourist trap I thought it’d be. It’s got its own rhythm—good food, an easygoing atmosphere, and a crowd of locals who aren’t shy about sharing their favorite spots around town.
