I’m Jake Newman. The Portland Logbook is my love letter to this city: the food worth hunting down, the history that refuses to die, the corners you only find if you’re paying attention.

Forget Everything Else… Go Eat Lunch Here in Portland

I’ve eaten my way through Portland more than I’d like to admit to my doctor. It takes a lot to catch me off guard. Luncheonette on Cumberland Ave did.

I’d been curious since I watched Three Left Hands paint their sign by hand. The street isn’t anything special. Mostly apartments. The kind of stretch you just drive through on your way to Washington Ave or the Eastern Prom. But inside, Luncheonette feels different. I didn’t want to leave. It’s the sort of room you want to sit in with your closest friends, laugh too loud, and split something sweet.

Part of that comes from the food. I ordered the roasted pork sandwich without reading the fine print. Pork, Mozzarella, olives, sun-dried tomatoes. I don’t even like olives. This sandwich might have flipped me. The brine against the sweetness, the meat falling apart, bread catching the antipasti relish. It just worked.

Then the potato salad landed. Heavy on the whole-grain mustard, sharp in the way my Eastern European grandmother would have approved of. That alone could have been lunch, and I’d still be writing about it. Washed down with iced tea, it was one of those meals that makes the day tilt a little better.

But what really sealed it was Angela and Alex, the chef-owners of Luncheonette in the East End. They are as kind as they come. The sort of warmth that feels rare. They don’t just hand you food; they make you feel like you’re part of something.

And Luncheonette isn’t stopping at lunch. They have been slipping in dinner nights too. The first was Korean, and everyone I trust said it was phenomenal. They are running another one in October. Move fast, because the first sold out before most people even knew it was happening.

Luncheonette is quick, unpretentious, and willing to take chances. That is why it feels special. In a city spoiled with good food, it is rare to find a place that still surprises you. This one does.

Why I Keep the Logbook Free

I put a lot of heart into The Portland Logbook every week. It’s my way of giving back to the city that’s given me so much. And I have a lot more planned (maybe meetups, or private dinner events, or who knows).

But every week people write to me or fill out the survey's about how they can support this project. I appreciate it so much.

If you didn’t know, I’m a real estate agent with Portside Real Estate Group. And while all I ask is that you read (and maybe share) the newsletter, there is one other thing you could do if it fits your future plans: think of me if you or someone you know is thinking about buying or selling a home around Portland.

If moving’s ever on your mind, let’s grab a coffee at Tandem or Another Round, my treat. We can talk homes, neighborhoods, or just what’s happening around town.

Thanks for letting me share Portland with you, and for trusting me to help people find their place in it.

If it’s easier, you can also just reply to this email!

🐾 Adoptable Buddies of the Week! 🐾

🐶 Bambie – 3 yrs
Basically a golden retriever in deer cosplay. Loves fetch, loves naps, loves other dogs. Sweet, goofy, and ridiculously lovable. Someone is going to be obsessed with her, might as well be you.

🐱 Walter – 2 yrs
Introvert seeks patient roommate. He won't be in your lap on day one, but when he finally leans in? That’s loyalty. Quiet home, kind human, maybe another mellow pet, that’s his dream life. Give him a safe place and he’ll give you trust.

🐶 Freyja – 9 yrs
Looking for a soul bond? She’s it. No kids, no other pets, she wants all of you. Smart, athletic, and crazy devoted once she picks her person. If you're outdoorsy and love being worshipped by one very opinionated queen, come meet her.
