I’m Jake Newman. The Portland Logbook is my love letter to this city: the food worth hunting down, the history that refuses to die, the corners you only find if you’re paying attention.

Does this new coffee shop in Brunswick have my vote for the best in midcoast?
Tern Coffee & Tea opened in downtown Brunswick this Summer and I am already wondering if it might be the best coffee shop in the entire Midcoast.
I end up driving this way a lot now that family moved to Bath. Usually I peel off the highway and beeline for Solo Pane Patisserie like a moth to a flame, but on this trip I had a different mission. It hit me that my two favorite breakfast spots in Brunswick are Dutchman’s for a bagel and Dog Bar Jim for a breakfast sandwich. If the Midcoast wanted to keep up, I needed a go to coffee shop up here too.
So I asked Milo, who I truly believe makes the best coffee in Portland since joining Another Round, where he stops when he heads north. He lives in Brunswick, so he knows the scene. He didn’t hesitate. “Have you been to Tern?”
The place sits right on Maine Street and feels like it belongs there. Clean lines. Calm energy. A tiny espresso machine that’s as beautiful as it is small. The kind of shop that pays attention to the little things without trying too hard. They roast in house and you can taste it immediately.
The couple behind it, Heidi and Chris, have been roasting for years. They started Tern out of their home in Jefferson after working everywhere from Vermont to Maine. This shop gives them a place to serve their coffee, share their teas, and show off the gear they love. They care about the craft. The sourcing. The farmers. The equipment.
I ordered a cortado and stood there for a minute watching the morning unfold. Brunswick feels different from Portland. Slower. A little quieter. Tern fits that rhythm.
Does this new coffee shop get my vote for the best in the Midcoast. It might. I need a few more visits to be sure, but after one cup at Tern the bar is suddenly a lot higher. If this keeps up, I’m going to have to rethink my best coffee shops list pretty soon.

Huckberry Saw the Real Maine
Huckberry just put out a Maine Dirt piece and it’s actually really good. If you haven’t watched it yet, grab a coffee or make some popcorn and settle in. It’ll make you want to wander around the rest of Maine. Portland’s great, but it’s nice to see the wider state get some love too.
