I’m Jake Newman. The Portland Logbook is my love letter to this city: the food worth hunting down, the history that refuses to die, the corners you only find if you’re paying attention.

The Best Chocolate Chip Cookies in Portland Maine

There’s no clean way to rank chocolate chip cookies.

Everyone’s got their thing. Crispy edges. Soft center. Thick, thin, milk chocolate, dark chocolate.

But I’ve been eating a lot of cookies. Like… a lot.

So I put together my list of the best chocolate chip cookies in Portland right now.

Some are worth going out of your way for. Some aren’t.

It’s Not Planting Season Yet

It’s starting! Not planting yet. Just getting things ready.

You can tell because people are back outside messing around in their yards again. Still kind of cold, still muddy, but they’re out there anyway. Raking, pulling, chopping, turning dirt like they’ve been waiting all winter to do it.

Drove past Broadway Gardens yesterday and someone was loading what had to be twenty bags of mulch into the back of a Crosstrek.

Right now, it isn’t really about planting yet. It’s about getting everything ready: cleaning up the beds, pulling out whatever didn’t make it through winter, loosening the soil, and putting down a fresh layer of mulch.

And inside, people are already starting seedlings. Windowsills, little trays, whatever they can set up. Just getting a head start.

If you do that now, you’re ahead. When it actually warms up, you’re not starting from scratch; you’re just dropping things in.

If you’re not totally sure what to do next, now’s a good time to figure it out.

Give it like two weeks, and your street’s going to look completely different.
